Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival promises hot schools action

2015-03-24 00:00

IT may be early days in the schoolboy rugby calendar, but 12 top sides from around the country are shaped up for battle at Kearsney College’s Easter Rugby Festival next week.

The eighth tournament kicks-off on Thursday next week, with each team playing three matches. There is a day’s rest between each day of action, with the second round on Saturday and the final day on Easter Monday.

Grey College from Bloemfontein should attract the crowds, as should Menlo Park and Affies from Pretoria. Also in the mix are EG Jansen (Boksburg), HTS Middelburg (Mpumalanga), Selborne, Dale College and Framesby (all Eastern Cape), SACS (Cape Town) and the KZN trio of Kearsney, Glenwood and Westville Boys’ High School.

While there are no overall winners at the festival, the idea is to give schoolboys and teams the opportunity to play different opposition and showcase their skills.

On the sideline are scouts from the Sharks Academy and KZN Rugby Union, the academy offering three bursaries to the best forward, best back and player of the tournament.

Over the past years, many a fledgling talent has boosted the seeds of rugby within the province, providing a career opportunity for youngsters to take their game to the next level.

The first match each day kicks off at 9.30 am and at 8.30 am, there are primary school fixtures involving teams from Umhlali Prep, Pelham Senior Primary, Highbury and a KZNRU U13 Ibutho development side.

Entry is R50 per vehicle or R20 a person on foot. This includes a 40-page glossy programme with all the teams and the players’ statistics.

Food and refreshments will be on sale throughout each match day.
