A HIGHLY successful inaugural Independent Schools Stayers Basketball Tournament was held at Kearsney College during the holidays.

Twelve schools from around the country participated, playing five pool matches and then cross pool games to determine which independent school had South Africa’s best emerging basketball team. St Alban’s from Pretoria came out tops and host Kearsney were KwaZulu-Natal’s best participating team, with Michaelhouse just behind them.

The tournament aimed to improve the profile of basketball at independent schools.

The final day of competition saw very tough and competitive games take place, as teams battled for a good seeding for next year’s event. St Alban’s emerged as the strongest team of the tournament, edging out a determined St John’s from Johannesburg in an exciting final game.
