Kearsney vs Hilton today

2013-06-15 00:00

WITH the long weekend upon us, most KZN schools are not playing rugby today. It is mainly the top schools that are playing, in order to fit in their fixtures for the season.

Next weekend, the final match will be played when Michaelhouse host Hilton, and on Thursday, Kearsney will play Maritzburg College, after the match was postponed last weekend due to illness among the College boys. College and Glenwood both have fixtures next term.

This weekend, Kearsney host Hilton. The home side will be rested after not playing last week, while Hilton had a tough match against DHS. On paper and results, the game should be won comfortably by Kearsney, but Hilton have shown themselves to be fighters and they will not lie down.

Cameron Wright, the Hilton captain, who is U19 and not eligible for Craven Week this year, is arguably the top scrumhalf in the province, and his long passes, high kicks and sniping around the tight phases, have put many sides under extreme pressure this season.

The Du Preez brothers and eighth man Ayron Schramm form a formidable attacking unit, and if they are given room, they will exploit it. This sets up a fascinating contest where the visitors will probably try to keep the ball away from the Kearsney forwards, and run them off their feet.

Westville travel to play on Goldstones and the College side will eagerly await them. Some of their players will not play as they have not fully recovered from illness, but the team will still be a strong one. Westville also have a good side and it is their last match of the year, so they are likely to raise their game to finish as one of the top three teams in the province.

Both teams should play an expansive game as their main strength lies in the backs. College will probably have an added advantage of a stronger tight five, but the line-outs and loose ball could prove crucial. This could be where the game is won or lost.

Michaelhouse will host DHS, and if the home side can play the rugby shown in their past three encounters, they should overcome DHS, who are lacking confidence after a poor season.

St Charles travel to play Clifton and this should prove to be a good end to the season for the visitors. Both teams lost against DHS by a similar margin but Saints are the favourites as they have played more of the top sides than Clifton.

Fixtures: Kearsney vs Hilton, Maritzburg College vs Westville, Michaelhouse vs DHS, Clifton vs St Charles, George Campbell vs Glenwood, Port Natal vs Glenwood II, Kuswag vs Kingsway.
