Keeping criminals at bay

2014-04-24 00:00

SUNNINGDALE residents may look at instituting a 24-hour security monitoring service as a precautionary effort at keeping criminal elements at bay.

Sunningdale Homeowners Assocation chairperson Andre Hattingh said residents are considering moving over to have guard huts and vehicle monitoring in the suburb, following suit with several other suburbs in nearby Durban North and Umhlanga. The guard hut can cost as much as R20 000 per month with 24/7 monitoring.

“At this point it is a discussion, we are looking at other options such as an urban improvement precinct [UIP] too,” said Hattingh.

UIPs, which are controlled by city bylaws, have become popular in commercial sectors such as Umhlanga and Florida Road. The system allows for extra services to be provided such as cleaning, verge cutting, gardening, street cleaning and security. Home or business owners must pay an additional rate over and above their normal council rate, which is then administered independently by a purpose-formed NPO. The extra rate is charged by the council and then transferred to the NPO. In order for a UIP to be accepted, 66% of homeowners must agree or combined property values must exceed R100 million.

Hattingh said the homeowners already manage their own private park.

“Sunningdale was built in 1975 as a housing development by Tongaat-Hullett. It has been completely built up since then. We are also changing our homeowners constitution soon to adapt to the changes of our area, and the new constitution will place extra emphasis on building and garden regulations,” said Hattingh.
