Kenya: Grenade kills two as fears grow over riots

2012-08-29 00:00

MOMBASA — Kenyan police officer and a civilian were killed yesterday when rioters hurled a grenade at officers who were trying to quell protests in the port city of Mombasa, police said.

“They have attacked our officers with a grenade. They threw it inside their lorry (police truck). Two people are dead, one of them is an officer the other is a civilian,” said Benedict Kigen, a senior police intelligence officer in Mombasa.

A dozen men were arrested yesterday after they erected burning barricades in the city and threw rocks at police. The Daily Nation reported that the violence erupted after the death of Sheik Aboud Rogo, who was shot in an ambush in the outskirts of the predominantly Muslim city. Several members of his family were wounded.

He was a leading voice demanding sharia law in Mombasa and the Kenyan coastal provinces up to the border of Somalia. The Kenyan government now worries that his murder could cause large-scale sectarian riots.
