Kershaw: Cream of SA tennis expected at Braaiketts tournament

2010-12-29 00:00

THE annual Braaiketts Open and Junior Tennis Tournament takes place from Wednesday, January 12, to Sunday, January 16, at Kershaw Park.

The 2011 Braaiketts tournament is the 14th running of the event and traditionally attracts a large field of the best juniors and seniors.

Previously the senior event doubled as the KZN Open, but for next year, KZN Tennis have given the Durban Tennis Association the right to stage the KZN Open in a bid to spread the province’s flagship event to other parts of the province.

The Braaiketts junior tournament will be run on a round-robin basis and caters for categories 10 years and under, 12 and under, 14 and under, and 18 and under for girls and boys, singles and doubles.

The senior event for men and women will be run on the traditional knockout basis, as in major events around the world.

One of the early entrants in the Braaiketts Men’s Open is Andrew Anderson, currently ranked 450th in the world. Tournament director Hilary Greenwood told The Witness on Thursday there is a chance that last year’s winner, South African Davis Cup player Raven Klaasen, will be back to defend his title along with 2010 runner-up Ruan Roelofse.

The tournament, which has carried the most prize money outside the SA Tennis Open for a number of years, regularly draws the cream of South Africa’s talent and next month’s event is expected to follow a similar path.

Entries close on January 6 and those wishing to know more about the tournament can call tournament director Hilary Greenwood at 082 553 2971.
