Khanyi Dhlomo has wise words on life and success

A GOOD breakfast, on a great spring day, in the company of women of like-mind, is possibly one of the best ways to start your day, but the women of Pietermaritzburg and a few men who attended Breakfast with Khanyi will tell you that was R120 well spent since they got even more than they bargained for.

Hosted by The Witness and the Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business, the event was held at the Sinodale Centre and the place was abuzz with anticipation. From the City of Choice’s first lady to influential businesswomen and women who simply wanted to rub shoulders with the fabulous Khanyi Dhlomo, the enthusiastic fans made a beeline to her any chance they got in an effort to get close and personal with their icon.

And like her name suggests, Khanyisile “Nokuthula”, Dhlomo brought “light with serenity” to her expectant audience who came prepared to hear how she has managed to let her passion be the power in her life and career.

From how she raises her two boys, to how she managed to become a powerhouse to be reckoned with in the media world, Dhlomo gave rich, honest and insightful advice.

“The real source of success is hard work,” Dhlomo told her fans. And if you’ve ever dreamt of being part of her winning team, you must be determined to do this and dare to dream.

With strong roots in Pietermaritzburg, this Umlazi girl was educated in the city and described the midlands as an area with great schools, adding she was glad to come to a place “that built her up.”

For The Witness managing director, Piet le Roux, Dhlomo’s visit was made twice as special by the fact that he served with her father, Oscar Dhlomo, who was a non-executive member of the board for The Witness.

Dhlomo told her listeners that fortune preferred the prepared and stressed the importance of having a clear map of where you are going and goal-setting. For her this started at the age of 16 after winning the Thandi Face Cover Girl competition. That exposure increased her interest in the industry to the point that she started creating her own magazines.

Then it was through cutting and pasting other people’s work, but today she is the owner of two of her own magazines, Destiny and Destiny Man. Her latest work, a sport and lifestyle magazine, Sport Teen, focusing primarily on soccer will be launched next week.

She summed up career and life strategies for any woman as first dealing with fear, which she described as a “passion-killer”; dealing with low self esteem; living life with a positive attitude; not giving up loving what you do; finding your balance in life; loving unconditionally, even in work relationships, as well as learning to be a good leader.
