Khaya Majola Week: Surprise results as KZN teams fumble on penultimate day

2011-12-20 00:00

THERE were surprise results on the penultimate day of the U19 Coca Cola Khaya Majola Week yesterday on a day when batsmen generally struggled.

Both KZN teams lost on the first limited-over day. Inland went down by 22 runs to Griqualand West and Coastals lost by 77 runs against Western Province.

Border top-scored with 215 for seven against North West.

Only six batsmen scored half-centuries, with Lesiba Ngoepe (Hans Moore) of Easterns, making an undefeated 88, following his 79 not out against KZN Inland in a T20 game on Sunday.

Six bowlers captured four wickets, with another Easterns player, Vince Moore (Springs BHS), taking four for 14 in 7.2 overs.

Jovaun van Wyngaardt (Waterkloof) earned the same figures, using one more ball for his four wickets in Northerns’ victory over Eastern Province.

Inland had Griquas at 123 for seven, but a match-saving eighth-wicket partnership of 58 between Diego Rosier (Noordkaap) and Kagiso Mohale (Emang Mmogo HS) allowed Griquas to reach 185 all out on the last ball of their 50 overs. Keegan Davids (St Charles) was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets.

Wickets fell regularly as partnerships struggled to develop, and Inland were all out in the 47th over and 22 runs short.

Top scorers for the locals were 30 and 27 by two Maritzburg College boys Kewan Harries and Daryn Dupavillon respectively.

When Western Province were all out for 162 in the 48th over, Coastals would have been fairly confident of reaching this target. However, they lost early wickets and never recovered. Opening bowler Travis Muller (Wynberg) took four wickets for 23 in six overs and Coastals were all out in 22 overs for a paltry 85.

Senuran Muthusamy (Clifton) top-scored with 27. Earlier Kyle Simmonds (Westville) returned figures of three for 33 in 10 overs and Mark Airey (Kearsney) three for 24 in three overs.
