2011-09-22 00:00

FORMER Howick police Sergeant Mlungisi George Khena abandoned his bail application in the Howick Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Khena faces an extortion charge after allegations that he solicited a R15 000 bribe from Moses Sabelo Madondo to make a murder and attempted murder case “go away”.

State prosecutor Rene Padayachee said she is still awaiting cellphone records and video footage of the location where the alleged transaction took place. She asked that the case be adjourned for further investigations.

Madondo was gunned down at his home in Sphumelele, Howick, on August 18 by unknown people.

In another of Khena’s cases, involving armed robbery, the state will be applying for the cancellation of bail in the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court on Monday.

The Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court will be handing down sentence against Khena on October 14 in another extortion case.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane confirmed that Khena resigned in June.
