Khenyeza shuts door on Bafana

CAPE TOWN — Mpumalanga Black Aces striker Mabhuti Khenyeza revealed yesterday that he does not intend to don the national team jersey in the future.

The former Ajax Cape Town forward told the website that Bafana Bafana belongs “to his history books”. Although current coach Gordon Igesund believes in selecting players based on recent form, Khenyeza does not aspire to be considered.

“I have had my fair share in the Bafana Bafana set-up and I honestly do not want to go back there again,” Khanyeza said.

“I am aware that Gordon Igesund is giving players who are performing well a chance, but unfortunately I think I have passed that stage of playing for Bafana.”

The 31-year-old veteran is yet to open his account for the newly promoted side. However, he has been on top of his game under former Bafana coach Clive Barker. Khenyeza has credited Barker with helping him re-discover his football talent.

“He [Clive] is a super coach. He brings the best out of each of us and I am really privileged to be coached by him.”

Khenyeza made his debut for Bafana back in 2003 under coach Shakes Mashaba, earning himself 10 caps without a goal to his name.

Khenyeza last featured for the national team prior to the 2009 Fifa Confederations Cup in a friendly against Iceland under then coach Joel Santana.
