Kid survives roadside mishap

2008-12-23 00:00

A breakdown on the way to KwaMashu last weekend led to the deaths of two goats and the birth of a kid.

A truck broke down on the N3 heading toward Durban and was stationary for over 10 hours when the SPCA were called. They found the newborn kid and two injured goats, which were put down.

The SPCA’s Maureen Vida said goats are transported throughout the year, but the volumes increase in December because of traditional slaughtering.

She said SPCAs countrywide monitor animal transporters and the Road and Traffic Inspectorate have been “very vigilant of trucks incorrectly loaded, overloaded or stranded and alert the SPCA whenever a case arises”.

She appealed to the public to notify the SPCA if they see vehicles transporting animals illegally. She offered SPCA assistance to animal transporters who are unsure about the rules of the road relating to animals.
