Kidnapper foiled at slain girl’s school

A PUPIL of Die Burger High School in Roodepoort — the murdered Louise de Waal’s school — was nearly abducted early yesterday morning near the main gate of the school.

A memorial service was held at the school yesterday for Louise, who was abducted and murdered last Wednesday.

The would-be kidnapper, who was armed with a screwdriver, fled when a security guard from the school approached him.

The 21-year-old man was arrested shortly afterwards.

The girl, who is in grade 10, was on her way to the school at about 5.45 am when a man in a silver Volkswagen Fox drove slowly past her, said Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Pinky Tsinyane.

“The man then stopped and apparently reversed before stopping again, getting out and opening the boot. We assume that was when he might have taken the screwdriver from the boot.”

The girl, who may not be identified, screamed when the man grabbed her by her jersey and tried to force her into the car. She wriggled out of her jersey in an attempt to escape.

Security guard Samuel Maleta heard her yelling and rushed to her aid.

Tsinyane said the attacker then fled.

Beeld has heard that someone took down the vehicle’s registration number and gave it to the police.

The suspected attacker was apprehended in the area within minutes afterwards.

The girl received trauma counselling at the Florida police station.

Tsinyane said the accused is being held in custody and is expected to appear in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court tomorrow on a charge of attempted kidnapping.

Later in the day an emotional memorial was held for Louise in a marquee on the school rugby field.

Tribute was paid to her academic abilities, and her mother, Shireen, accepted a number of awards that she would have received from the school in the near future.

Louise was abducted at gunpoint while walking to school last Wednesday morning and was murdered hours later.
