Kids hurt as wall collapses

2014-04-01 00:00

A MOTHER, her child and five other children from the neighbourhood escaped with injuries after a wall collapsed on them in Nkwali Road near Newlands East yesterday afternoon. The children are aged between six and nine.

Chris Maphumulo, a resident in the area, told The Witness that the woman was building an extension to her house near an embankment when it collapsed, pushing the wet brick wall down. The children and the woman were injured.

“The wall was about two or three metres high, and it was still wet. The landscape in which our homes are built is bad. We are situated on the hills and there’s nothing we can do about it. The woman and children were rushed to hospital by ambulance,” said Maphumulo.

KZN EMS paramedic Robert McKenzie said two of the children were still stuck in the rubble when they got to the scene.

“The first two paramedics on the scene called for assistance and for more ambulances. Using just their hands, the two paramedics and community members started to remove the children from the rubble,” said McKenzie.
