Killed en route to race

THE excitement as cyclists warmed up for this year’s Amashova Cycling event took a sad turn when a 71-year-old Durban man was knocked down before even reaching the starting line. He died in hospital hours after paramedics rushed him to the Pietermaritzburg Mediclinic.

Annie Batchelder, spokesperson for the Tsogo Sun Amashova cycling race, confirmed yesterday that they were informed that the participant had died in hospital as result of his injuries.

She would not give his name, as they had not spoken to the man’s family yet.

According to ER24’s Werner Vermaak, the man was knocked down by a minibus on Boshoff Street in Pietermaritzburg, mere blocks away from the starting point in Chief Albert Luthuli Street.

Paramedics found the man about 20 metres away from his bike, with multiple fractures.

Vermaak said the man was stabilised on the scene and transported to the Mediclinic hospital for further treatment.

Batchelder said: “He was riding to the race. He wasn’t on the route when he was knocked over by a taxi. We are really sad, because all our charity goes towards road safety campaigns. This is the last thing that we wanted.”

According to witnesses, the man apparently collided head-on with the taxi.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said police were still taking statements from the family last night, after being informed that the injured man had died.
