Killed for her baby: suspect remanded

2010-09-14 00:00

A 26-YEAR-OLD man, who was arrested for a suspected murder in which a woman was killed for her baby at uMtwalume just outside Hibberdene in August last year, appeared in the high court in Ramsgate yesterday. His case was was postponed until May 30, 2011.

Mlungisi Cele will be imprisoned at a south coast facility and refused bail until then.

Cele is facing a charge of murder.

It is alleged that he accepted a payment of R850 to commit the crime.

According to Warrant Officer Vasu Govender of the South African Police Force, a woman from the uMtwalume community hired Cele as a hit-man.

The woman had apparently been under severe pressure from her husband to bear a child. It is believed she faked a pregnancy and that she instructed Cele to murder the mother of a one-month-old baby at which point she kidnapped the infant.

The girl, now over a year old, has since been recovered.

Govender said he is not sure whether the child has been living with the authorities or with her biological father.

The woman who hired the hit- man is currently serving an 18-year jail sentence for her crime and is due to testify against Cele.

Govender confirmed that the victim had her throat cut and was stabbed several times in the body when she was murdered.

The community police forum originally informed the police about the initial kidnapping.
