AN off-duty policeman had to fire a shot at a man who was stabbing another man in Pelham and turned on the policeman when he tried to intervene.

A 54-year-old Pietermaritzburg man died in the incident on Wednesday evening in John Barker Avenue in Pelham. An off-duty policeman who heard the commotion, tried to intervene, but the suspect got away.

Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said the man left a pub premises and while walking along John Barker Avenue was confronted by the suspect. They argued and the suspect stabbed the deceased a number of times.

An off-duty policeman living in the area, who heard the commotion, went to investigate. He came upon the dead man’s attacker still attacking him.

“The police officer immediately shouted for the suspect to stop,” said Jeevan.

Not only did the knife-wielding attacker refuse to stop, he also tried to attack the policeman as well, who was then forced to retaliate by firing at the attacker. According to Jeevan, the assailant managed to get away and no arrests have been made at this stage, but police are investigating.

Jeevan said the motive is still unknown. The man has not been identified but The Witness understands that a friend has contacted police to identify the body today.

“We are making an appeal to anyone with information that can assist with their investigation to contact Detective Captain Pieter van Zanten from SAPS Alexandra Road Detective Services on his office number at 033 845 7722 or on his cell at 079 500 8474,” added Jeevan.
