Killer given life plus 57 years’ jail

FORTUNATELY, the “arm of the law is long”, Acting High Court Judge Khosi Hadebe said yesterday when she sentenced Bongani Ndlovu (24) to life plus a total of 57 years’ imprisonment for his role in a ”trail of destruction” in KwaZulu-Natal dating back to March 2005.

Some of the sentences were ordered to run concurrently with each other as well as with the life term.

“It seems that you and your friends embarked on a trail of destruction and didn’t care if souls were lost in the process,” the judge told Ndlovu.

Ndlovu was found guilty of the murder of Zimbukane Amos Mashaba — a passenger in a minibus taxi that was taking people from Mpumalanga province to Kranskop in KZN for a church service on the evening of March 7, 2005.

He was also convicted of attempting to murder the taxi driver, Claus Malubane, and another passenger, Samuel Sibusiso Khumalo, and of robbery with aggravating circumstances of all 15 occupants of the minibus.

Evidence led at the trial indicated that Ndlovu was a member of a crime syndicate whose aim had been to commit robberies primarily in the Kranskop, Muden, Greytown, Pomeroy and Tugela Ferry areas.

He was also convicted of robbery counts involving a Kranskop doctor and two Muden businesses.
