Killer taxi crash driver arrested

FIVE people were killed, eight others sustained serious injuries and another was critically injured when the taxi they were travelling in overturned at Wembezi in the early hours of Saturday morning.

According to Zinhle Mngomezulu, spokesperson for the Road Traffic Inspectorate in KZN, the taxi was travelling from Estcourt to Wembezi when the accident happened. All the occupants were between the ages of 13 and 25.

She said the driver, who has since been arrested, was driving under the influence of alcohol and without a valid driver’s licence; he only had a learner’s licence.

Among the dead were three females and two males.

In another accident in Dundee, four people were killed yesterday when a light motor vehicle they were travelling in sideswiped a truck near Sunset Rest, resulting in both cars losing control and going over a cliff. Mngomezulu said the four people in the light motor vehicle were killed on impact.

In Pietermaritzburg, a man who was being pursued by the police for a traffic violation was killed near the Peter Brown intersection where he allegedly lost control of his vehicle and it overturned.

Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said the police had pursued the man from the Pietermaritzburg CBD after he had run a red robot and was driving recklessly. He managed to evade the police and made his way to the Townhill area where the accident occured. He died at the scene.

PMB man caught doing 205km per hour

A PIETERMARITZBURG motorist driving a BMW was arrested and fined R2 000 after he was caught driving at 205 km/h on the N2 near Ifafa.

The man was taken to the Hibberdene ­police station where he paid the R2 000 bail,. He is expected to appear in court today.
