Killer to appeal life sentence

2013-01-29 00:00

A DAMBUZA man is appealing a life sentence and 15 additional years’ imprisonment imposed on him in June last year for murder and robbery.

Tegogo Mofokeng was convicted of bludgeoning Indranie Thungavelu to death with a padlock.

Thungavelu was attacked in her home in Violet Road in Howick West on August 21, 2009.

She died of her injuries in Chief Albert Luthuli Hospital in Durban two days later.

Evidence showed Thungavelu was alone at home when the assault took place. She was so violently beaten that blood spattered the walls and stove. She fell into a coma from which she never recovered.

State advocate Dheelan Naidoo has opposed Mofokeng’s application for a reduced sentence.

KZN Judge President Chiman Patel, Judge Rishi Seegobin and Judge Jerome Mnguni, reserved judgment in the matter.
