Killing of accused holds up Zondi trial

2009-07-30 00:00

THE expected court appearance yesterday of the two men accused of killing Inkosi Mbongeleni Zondi of Msinga earlier this year had to be postponed after one of the accused, Makhosabo Mkhize, was murdered at his home on Tuesday evening.

Mkhize (25) and Siphamandla Mhlongo (35) are accused of killing Zondi, a descendant of the famous Inkosi Bhambatha Zondi and a close ally of the African National Congress.

Mhlongo, however, appeared briefly in court and the matter was postponed to August 12 to give the state time to confirm Mkhize’s death.

According to police reports, Mkhize was killed by an unknown gunman who attacked him in his sleep at his home in KwaMashu outside Durban, police said yesterday. He was out on bail when he was killed.

Police Director Phindile Radebe said Mkhize was shot several times. She said his body was riddled with bullets and the police found 19 spent rounds of ammunition from an R5 and 9 mm pistols.

She said: “It is alleged that a group of men attacked Mkhize while he was sleeping,”

Radebe said it was still too early to speculate as to whether Mkhize’s murder was related to the charges he was facing for the murder of Inkosi Zondi.

According to neighbours, Mkhize was a target as the killers knew where he lived. They said they heard two shots being fired and saw two men running away from the area to a car that was already waiting for them across the street.

Zondi was shot dead in Durban’s Umlazi township on January 22 while visiting his fiancé in thearea.
