King to open house of chiefs

2010-03-30 00:00

ZULU King Goodwill Zwelithini will officially open the sitting of the provincial House of Traditional Leaders at the Royal Showgrounds in Pietermaritzburg today.

The sitting is the first under the new leadership, which was elected in May last year. The session last year saw provincial amakhosi electing new office bearers under chairman inkosi Bhekisisa F. Bhengu. Former chairman inkosi Mangosuthu Buthelezi decided not to stand for re-election.

According to the spokesman for the Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Department, Vernon Mchunu, MEC Nomusa Dube is expected to attend the sitting as the political head of the department.

The king is going to deliver a keynote address and officially open the house as part of his mandate as the constitutional monarch of KwaZulu-Natal.

“This significant sitting carves the path for the house to meet and make decisions that have an important bearing on the lives of the people of KwaZulu-Natal,” Mchunu said.

Premier Dr Zweli Mkhize will deliver a speech on behalf of the provincial government.

Mchunu said that during subsequent sessions, amakhosi are expected to discuss, among other things, the thorny issue of co-operation between them and all levels of government regarding delivery of development in their areas.

The issue of the male circumcision ritual, which was recently revived by the king, will also form part of the discussions.
