King’s Park: Mr Price sign naming rights

2011-01-28 00:00

THE Sharks yesterday concluded “a substantial sponsorship deal” that effectively gives Mr Price the naming right at King’s Park Stadium for the next six years.

The deal was confirmed by Sharks CEO Brian van Zyl just minutes after the contract was signed late yesterday.

Mr Price, already the title sponsors of the Sharks, have taken over from Absa, which suddenly terminated an 11-year association with the KZN franchise on the eve of the Currie Cup final in Durban.

“What I’m particularly happy about,” Van Zyl told The Witness yesterday, “is that Mr Price have agreed to return to the traditional King’s Park in naming the stadium. So instead of Absa Stadium we now have the Sharks playing at the Mr Price King’s Park Stadium.”

Van Zyl said the contract is initially for one year, but the plan is to sign a new contract later this year that will stretch the sponsorship from 2012 to 2017.

“This deal was at short notice and that is why we have signed for one year and will re-negotiate another five-year contract later this year.”

Van Zyl would not be drawn on the amount of the sponsorship.

“But a substantial amount is involved and I’m delighted that the deal has gone through.”

The Sharks play their first game of the 2011 season at Newlands next Tuesday when they face the Lions in a Tri-Series friendly. They then meet the Stormers, also in Cape Town, next weekend and will play their first game at King’s Park on February 19 when they open their Super Rugby campaign against the Cheetahs.
