King’s statue unveiling in two weeks

2008-09-04 00:00

The statue of King Dinuzulu in Durban is to be unveiled on September 20, Premier S’bu Ndebele announced yesterday.

Ndebele commissioned the R600 000 bronze statue in 2005. It was erected in 2006 at the lower end of Berea Road opposite that of General Louis Botha as a gesture of reconciliation and has been wrapped in cloth ever since.

Ndebele said the delay was deliberate and the statue will be unveiled to coincide with the centenary of King Dinuzulu’s trial in Pietermaritzburg and his imprisonment on St Helena in 1908.

Other events to honour King Dinuzulu in September, the heritage month, are an exhibition at the Durban History Museum and a stage play based on the king’s life. The exhibition will open on September 20, and the play, by Jerry Pooe, is to be staged at the Playhouse from September 22 to 28.

These events will be preceded by the King Dinuzulu Choral Music Eisteddfod to be held at the Royal Showgrounds tomorrow.

“Dinuzulu composed many traditional amahubo songs. He saw music as a medium for mass protest,” Ndebele said.

Speaking in Durban yesterday, Ndebele announced several activities to celebrate the heritage of the people of the province.

They include a one-day heritage seminar to be held at the Sinodale Centre in Pietermaritzburg on September 22, the annual reed dance at Nyokeni Palace on September 13, King Shaka Memorial Day and a commemoration of King Dingane’s legacy.
