Klusener adds Savage, Van Wyk

TRUE to his word in indicating a change of personnel in the Dolphins squad, coach Lance Klusener has added Calvin Savage and Divan van Wyk to the mix ahead of today’s Momentum Cup one-day clash against the Knights in Bloemfontein.

Desperate for their first win of the season in any format of the game, Klusener has replaced injured opening batsman Jonathan Vandiar with Van Wyk, while Savage, who replaces Mthokozisi Shezi, offers a fast bowling option and some handy low-order batting.

Van Wyk opened the innings for the Dolphins in the Sunfoil Series four-day matches this season and after an average start, blossomed with a fine 95 against the Cobras in the rain-interrupted match at the Pietermaritzburg Oval.

Savage has performed consistently this season for the KZN provincial team, making vital runs at number seven. He has taken a few wickets along the way and was part of the SA U19 team that finished third at the World Cup in Australia.

Klusener indicated earlier this week that two points after three matches was not good enough and fell short of expectations.

A narrow loss to the Cobras was followed by an abandoned clash against the Warriors last Friday in Durban and a comprehensive loss to the Lions on Sunday. The two points earned to date have come from the rained out match and Klusener is keen for his charges to produce the goods on the field.

“Sitting at the bottom of the log is not a true reflection of what we are capable of. The time for talk is over and we need to do the business out in the middle, in all departments. We need batsmen to anchor the innings and bowlers to strike early and tie up an end,” said Klusener.

As for the Knights, they are without veteran keeper and opening batsman Morné van Wyk as he sits out a shoulder injury.

Play starts at 3 pm today.

Dolphins squad: Divan van Wyk, Cameron Delport, Daryn Smit (Captain), Imraan Khan, Vaughn van Jaarsveld, David Miller, Calvin Savage, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Criag Alexander, Robbie Frylinck, Prenelan Subrayen, Cody Chetty and Kyle Abbott.
