Knife gang strikes in Cramond

2011-08-23 00:00

A QUIET Friday night turned into a nightmare for a Cramond resident when robbers entered his house, put a knife to his throat and stole his car.

Michael Orthman (46) was at his home with his cousin Suzette van Heerden (45) when a man entered the kitchen with a knife.

A struggle ensued between Orthman and the man until four suspects, armed with knives and clad in balaclavas entered and he was forced to surrender.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan said Orthman was taken forcibly to the lounge and his and Van Heerden’s wrists were bound with a rope.

The suspects ransacked the house and demanded the keys to Orthman’s bakkie.

They loaded the bakkie with appliances, including a television set, a computer and other electrical equipment.

The suspects told Orthman to drive to Copesville and stuffed a sock in his mouth. He was later taken out of the bakkie and assaulted.

The police were contacted by Van Heerden after she managed to free herself. They found the bakkie parked at the side of the road.

The suspects fled and the police caught a 23-year-old man who appeared at the New Hanover Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Orthman sustained multiple bruises to his body and was taken to Northdale Hospital for treatment.
