Knifemen rob family at tollgate

A 13-YEAR-OLD girl’s birthday ended badly after her family was robbed on their way back from a party in Durban on Sunday.

The family was robbed at knifepoint at the Mariannhill toll plaza at around 4 pm.

The mother, Kim Pearson, told The Witness that after paying the toll fee she pulled over on the side to clean up a mess in the car.

“While I was bending over to clean the mess, someone shoved me from behind and then held me against the car.”

She said the knife-wielding man shouted and screamed, demanding money.

Another man, also armed with a knife, appeared.

The robbers took her and the children’s cellphones, her ID, credit cards and the bangles she was wearing.

“I couldn’t comprehend what was happening.

“I saw them holding my bags,” Pearson said.

She said people saw what was happening, but no one bothered to help them.

Although she was confused by what was happening, Pearson had enough time to take her car keys from the ignition.

She said this helped her because she could see that the robbers were looking for the keys.

They eventually left.

“I understand Zulu so I heard one of them telling the other one that they were running out of time. They then ran off.”

She said the children were hysterical, although they have since got over the trauma.

Pearson said that although their lives were spared, she still has some regrets about how she handled the situation.

“I am still angry. I could have done more.”

She reported the matter to the police yesterday.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane confirmed that the incident was reported, but said a case was not opened.

Last Sunday, another family was robbed at the same toll gate.

The family, returning from Verulam, was robbed by unidentified men who took away money cards, an ID and CDs.
