Knifemen rob, injure family at toll plaza

OMSHA Amirchand, her husband and their two daughters were subjected to a terrible ordeal while returning from Verulam on Sunday.

They were robbed by unidentified men at Mariannhill toll plaza at around 1.45 pm.

She said the incident has left her with mixed emotions.

“I am running from scared to angry. I am trying to tell my mind to stay positive.”

As they approached the toll plaza the Amirchands realised that they didn’t have enough money in the car to pay.

“My husband went behind the longest queue and I got out and went to the boot of the car to get my bag,” Amirchand said.

As she tried to get back in the car, she was pulled back by a man and pushed to the ground.

Another man went into the passenger seat with a knife.

Amirchand said she tried to fight her attacker, but he was too strong.

“He got a hold of my bag, which contained my purse with R120 and some change, with my cards and ID book.”

Her husband’s wallet, cards and CDs were also taken.

Amirchand said she ran around the car and screamed for help. She said people could see something was happening but were not sure what it was.

Her husband, who keeps a knife in the car, also tried to fight the robbers off, and was stabbed in the hand. Eventually some drivers stopped to help.

The robbers fled the scene.

“They then ran into the bushes and then into the settlement next to the highway. We could see them entering a house.”

She said she doesn’t want the same thing to happen to other people.

They reported the matter to the police and even showed them where the robbers went.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane confirmed the incident.

He said a case of robbery was opened at Pinetown SAPS, but no arrests had been made.
