Knifing: victim killed for R50

2010-04-22 00:00

A MERE R50 was all that Sihle Zimu (19) of Camperdown got from his victim who died from more than 30 stab wounds. This emerged in the high court in Pietermaritzburg yesterday.

Zimu, who pleaded guilty to the murder and aggravated robbery of Sibonelo Zondi after drinking at a tavern near Camperdown late last year, was jailed for an effective 20 years by Judge Leona Theron.

She found substantial and compelling circumstances justifying departure from the prescribed sentence of life in jail for the murder, imposing 20 years for the murder and 15 years for the robbery. She ordered tht the sentences run concurrently.

The mitigating factors were that Zimu accepted responsibility for his actions and showed remorse by pleading guilty, he was under the influence of alcohol and is a young first offender. These improved his prospects for rehabilitation.
