Knobkerrie killers get 20 years

2011-07-01 00:00

TWO men who pleaded guilty to assaulting a man with a knobkierrie, wrapping him in a carpet and setting him alight in the mistaken belief that he was dead, were each jailed for 20 years by Pietermaritzburg high court Judge Isaac Madondo yesterday.

Michael Mlotshwa (32) of Dargle and Mlindelwa Mazeka (27) of Impendle pleaded guilty to the murder of Siyabonga Mofokeng on June 4 this year, and detailed the events that led to the killing in statements read to the court by their legal aid lawyer, Ishi Khan.

Mlotshwa said the victim was involved in a relationship with his ex-girlfriend, the mother of his four-year-old son, Zanele Funeka.

On June 4 he went to visit his son and Mofokeng arrived and expressed irritation at seeing him there. They argued and Funeka took the boy and left the room.

Mlotshwa said he and Mofokeng grappled with each other.

Mazeka, his friend, arrived and armed himself with a knobkierrie.

Mlotshwa said that while he held Mofokeng, he told Mazeka to assault him with the knobkierrie.

Mazeka hit him twice over the head and Mofokeng fell to the floor bleeding from his head and nose.

Assuming he was dead, Mlotshwa said they wrapped him in a carpet and took him to a nearby field. There they poured petrol on him and set him alight before fleeing. He died of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Both accused said they were remorseful for what they had done.
