‘Knocker gang’ pair arrested

2014-03-03 00:00

TWO members of the notorious “Knocker gang” were arrested on Saturday by members of South African Police Services, Metro Police Officers and Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa).

The gang is believed to be responsible for a spate of armed robberies in Durban. A knocker gang is named so because of their modus operandi, which involves following people to their homes after they make large cash withdrawals, knocking on the door and then robbing them.

Knocker gangs also sometimes accost people at their businesses and in their vehicles after they make large cash withdrawals.

On Saturday, the suspects robbed an individual of R33 000 in cash outside a bank in Tongaat, a statement from Rusa said.

Tongaat SAPS members then circulated details of the suspects’ vehicle, a white Toyota Run X, over the SAPS radio channel.

Police officers from Verulam noticed the vehicle on Umdloti Beach Road, and a high speed chase ensued.

Rusa reaction officers responded to a call from the SAPS and Rusa head Prem Balram took off in a helicopter in search of the suspects.

Upon arrival at the scene, reaction officers were informed by SAPS officers that the suspects had crashed their vehicle in Mountview, and were fleeing on foot into dense bush firing several shots at the pursuing policeman.

After an extensive search, two of the suspects were arrested by SAPS officers as they came out of the bush. The other three suspects managed to evade arrest.

One of the arrested suspects was wanted in connection with five other cases of robbery.
