Kokstad council appoints new manager

2014-02-05 00:00

THE embattled Greater Kokstad Municipality has finally appointed a new municipal manager after allegations that it had lost direction because of financial woes.

Zamokuhle Johannes Mkhize’s appointment was made public at a press conference yesterday. Municipality Mayor Nosisa Jojozi said Mkhize, formerly the corporate service manager at Matatiele Local Municipality, was selected from four candidates after the resignation of former municipal manager Felix Nxumalo in August 2013.

Mkhize is the third municipal manager since the current council took over in 2011, this after councillors inaugurated the then municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi, currently the Msunduzi Municipality municipal manager, who resigned from the Greater Kokstad Municipality.

In December 2011, the municipality appointed Felix Nxumalo municipal manager, but he only served two years and resigned in August 2013. At the same time the municipality was accused of gross mal-administration, bankruptcy and poor financial management.

Last year a number of key managers left the municipality, resulting in important positions becoming vacant. Problems persisted in the financial year 2011/12 as council got a qualified audit opinion from the Auditor-General.

At the press conference, Jojozi denied that former municipal managers left due to council interference in the administration, saying they resigned to look for greener pastures.

Mkhize said he is ready to accept the challenges that lie ahead. “The council promises to be behind me and my team in terms of support to ensure that the objectives of the municipality are being achieved.”

DA councillor Leon Kotting said they are happy with the appointment of Mkhize because he presented well during interviews.

“… I believe Mkhize’s big challenge is the financial management in the institution in terms of cash flow. He has a hard task and will not have a time of luxury,” said Kotting.
