Komphela: Some hope for United

2014-05-20 00:00

IT’S been over a week since the news first broke of Maritzburg United coach Steve Komphela’s potential move to Chippa United, and by last night there was still no clarity on the matter as the sought-after coach remained silent.

The Team of Choice were, however, given a lifeline with the news that Chippa would not be relocating to Port Elizabeth next season — a deal that was thought to be part of the reason that the Cape Town-based club were able to offer Komphela such a lucrative deal.

Chippa released a statement yesterday morning confirming that the PE deal was off, and that negotiations with the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality had broken down — a situation bearing striking resemblance to the one that Maritzburg United found themselves in two years ago when PE attempted to lure them to the Eastern Cape.

But while Chippa were vocal on their failed relocation, they were mum on the Komphela issue.

“We have no comment on that,” communications manager Luthando Zibeko told The Witness yesterday. “There have been no further developments.”

Maritzburg chairperson Farouk Kadodia, still fighting for Komphela, said that he expected the matter to be resolved “this week”.

When asked whether or not the failed PE move played into his hands, he replied, “I hope so”, before challenging his manager to bring an end to what has been a roller-coaster few days for them.

“He [Komphela] has handled this situation the wrong way,” said Kadodia. “He needs to come back down to earth.”
