Komphela ‘denied he is leaving’

2014-05-16 00:00

THERE have been no further developments over the last two days concerning Maritzburg United coach Steve Komphela’s potential move to newly promoted PSL franchise Chippa United.

On Tuesday, Chippa chairperson Asiviwe Mpengesi was quoted as saying that he had secured Komphela officially, but the club has since backtracked, saying that negotiations were still on-going.

Where there is smoke, as they say, there is fire. But United have stood firm and yesterday released a statement on their website that read: “In view of the many statements that have been and continue to be made in the media about coach Steve Komphela having signed with Chippa United, it is important that the record is set straight so that so that correct reporting is done by the media.

“The coach has not approached the club to say that he is leaving, and in fact he has denied that he is leaving after he was approached by the chairperson on the basis of the media reports.

“So the reality is that the status quo remains until the chairperson is advised otherwise by the coach or his manager. It is the intention of the club to keep the coach and that has been made very clear by the chairperson.

“In an event where there are changes that must happen with the technical team, the chairperson will accordingly make that announcement.”

Chairperson Farouk Kadodia told The Witness yesterday that he had spoken with Komphela on Wednesday, but that there was no further clarity on the coach’s future after that conversation.

Komphela’s agent, Tim Sukazi, is reportedly handling the negotiations with Chippa.

Both Komphela and Sukazi were unavailable for comment yesterday.
