Kumar comedy is a dud

2009-07-21 00:00

I HONESTLY thought that after bizarre comedies like Welcolme and Chandni Chowk To China Akshay Kumar, that man who has earned himself the reputation of making you laugh, would have really given you something to laugh at in Kambakkht Ishq. All I can say is this is another dumb comedy from the man with the gummy grin and is the biggest dud of the year to date.

The film is about the battle of the sexes with the backdrop of Oakland, Califonia. Viraj (Akshay Kumar) is a Hollywood stuntman whose life mantra is “women are only good for two things”. Simitra (Kareena Kapoor) is a supermodel-surgeon, a certified man-hater, who thinks men just want one thing from women. The two are pitted against each other as Simitra’s best friend Kamini (Amrita Arora) weds Viraj’s brother Lucky (Atab Shivdasani).

Fate plays cupid as Viraj and Simitra keep bumping into each other — in airports, planes and exotic Italian towns. But then a bigger twist awaits as Simitra operates on Viraj and accidentally leaves a watch with an alarm inside his body. This is followed by a melodrama and sheer foolishness. You also get to see Sylvester Stallone in an action scene.

Kumar does have a dynamic sense of timing for comedy, but I would have thought that after Chandni Chowk To China he would choose his films more carefully.

Kapoor over acts, but Amrita Arora and Afab Shivdasani are commendable.

Debutant director Sabbir Khan’s film is all style and no substance.
