THE KwaDukuza police yesterday swooped on two homes in and around Richards Bay, confiscating over R100 000 worth of crack cocaine and drug manufacturing equipment. KwaDukuza cluster commander Brigadier Derek Captain-Hastibeer said the arrest was his cluster’s 11th major drug bust as they attempt to strangle the drug cartels within their precinct. “The suspect we arrested in Richards Bay had been supplying drug dealers in the KwaDukuza area. “If drug dealers try to operate where we are, we will find them,” said Captain-Hastibeer. Other items found were laptops and cellphones presumed to be stolen. The first raid was on Pelican Parade in the Richards Bay suburb of Birdswood and the second at President Swart Avenue, Panorama, in Empangeni. The suspect was renting the flats. “The intervention unit breached the Richards Bay premises with a search warrant, arresting the suspect inside the flat. The drugs were being manufactured in the Richards Bay home,” said Captain-Hastibeer. The joint operation — involving the Umhlali Dog Unit, the National Intervention Unit and local crime recording centre — was the culmination of several months of intelligence gathering. The suspect will appear in the Richards Bay Magistrate’s Court today.
