Labour closes death site

2010-10-15 00:00

KWAZULU-Natal’s Labour Department has closed down the construction site for the Arbour Crossing Shopping Centre in Amanzimtoti after one worker was killed and two others were seriously injured when a trench they were working in collapsed on them.

The accident happened on Tuesday and the department and the police are investigating the circumstances. The trench was excavated to install a stormwater drain.

Department spokesperson Page Boikanyo said operations at the site were shut down and a prohibition notice was issued to the construction company.

“The notice will only be revoked once all necessary safety measures are put in place by the employer. Inspectors also found that employees were given no protective gear. The employer was also unable to provide any safety records as prescribed by the Occupational Health and Safety Act,” Boikanyo said.

He added that the department has found 16 contraventions after inspecting 11 sites in the south of Durban, and two defaulters have received prohibition notices.
