Lack of water to extinguish fire as it guts Prestbury home

2008-02-19 00:00

THE Msunduzi Fire and Rescue Services were forced to dispatch a back-up vehicle to take more water to extinguish a house fire in Prestbury, as city engineers were in the process of repairing a burst water pipe in the area yesterday morning.

Fire and rescue services operations manager Essack Khan said two vehicles were initially dispatched to the burning house in Ashby Road, but later a third was sent out because of the lack of water in the area.

Essack said most of the house was gutted and damage has been estimated to run into hundreds of thousands of rands.

A mother and her six-month-old baby were in the house at the time when the fire broke out, but they both managed to escape to safety.

The exact cause of the fire was undetermined yesterday and forensic experts were investigating the incident.

Essack said the fire is thought to have started in one of the bedrooms.

The family were renting the premises and were said to be distraught at the scene.
