Lacklustre display from United

2014-03-31 00:00

THE passion and dedication that has been a common feature of Maritzburg United under coach Steve Komphela was simply not there as the Team of Choice slumped to a 2-1 defeat at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium against Platinum Stars on Saturday.

It was a result that has left them fourth from bottom of the table, and still dangerously close to relegation.

Mahlatse Makudubela scored the winner for the hosts 12 minutes from time after Zimbabwean Terrance Mandaza had made a long-awaited return to the score sheet, equalising for United in the second half. Mduduzi Nyanda had opened the scoring for Stars 10 minutes into the second period.

It was a lacklustre display from a United side that went into the match without the energy of rested captain Michael Morton, and the only positive to take from the clash was that none of the three sides below Komphela’s team won their matches on Saturday.

Golden Arrows stuttered their way to an uneventful 1-0 loss at the hands of Wits at King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday night, while Polokwane City and Free State Stars played out to a 1-1 draw to limit the impact of United’s loss.

“Maybe we did not want to win, for whatever reason,” Komphela said. “If you’re playing against a side like Platinum Stars, you need to be prepared to grind out a result.”

Komphela bemoaned the fact that his charges only switched on when they found themselves a goal down.

“But … you accept whatever has happened and you look forward to the next game,” he said.

In yesterday’s only two league fixtures, AmaZulu played out a 0-0 draw at Bloemfontein Celtic, while Mamelodi Sundowns kept their title aspirations alive with a 2-1 win over the University of Pretoria at Loftus.
