Ladysmith cop killed in accident

2015-01-14 00:00

A POLICEMAN was killed and another injured when a truck collided with their state vehicle on Monday afternoon.

Warrant Officer Siyabonga Mncwango (45) and Warrant Officer Bhekizitha Dube (43) were on duty travelling along the R616 between

Ladysmith and Bergville when the collision occurred. It is alleged the truck veered into the lane that the two police officers were travelling in and collided with their vehicle.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said Dube died upon impact while the truck driver and Mncwango sustained serious injuries and were rushed to hospital.

Dube had been in the police force for 20 years and at the time of his death had been working in the Ladysmith Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu said he was extremely shock-ed and taken aback by the loss.

Bergville police have opened a case of culpable homicide and are investigating the incident.
