Lambie out for Brumbies clash

2012-03-29 00:00

THE Sharks have suffered a major blow ahead of Saturday’s Super Rugby clash against the Brumbies in Canberra with flyhalf Pat Lambie — the hub of the team — sidelined by injury.

Lambie took a hefty blow to the jaw against the Waratahs in Sydney on Saturday and the injury is more serious than was initially feared.

Frenchman Frederic Michalak will take over as flyhalf and goalkicker. The good news is that centre JP Pietersen has been passed fit and returns at outside centre.

Tim Whitehead has been shifted from outside to inside centre, which is a trifle harsh on Meyer Bosman who was prominent in the Sharks’ improved backline display against the Waratahs, but now finds himself on the bench.

Coach John Plumtree has again jiggled his lock pairing with Steven Sykes, on the bench against the Waratahs, taking over from Anton Bresler and partnering Jandre Marais in the second row.

Jean Deysel, the Boks flank, also makes a return and will play off the bench after joining the Sharks in Sydney this week.

Tighthead prop Wiehahn Herbst also makes a return and will provide front-row cover.

Plumtree has opted for five forwards and two backs on the bench with Bosman providing back-up at both centre and flyhalf.

Meanwhile, the news from the Brumbies camp late last night was that playmaker Matt Toomua, who has been nursing a knee ligament injury, could be rushed back at flyhalf to sharpen the home team’s attack.

This would result in a backline reshuffle with Christian Lealiifano starting at inside centre and Wallaby Pat McCabe starting on the wing.

Ruaidhri Murphy is expected to take over from the ill Wallaby prop Dan Palmer

The match kicks off at 10.40 am (SA time) on Saturday.
