Land demo no threat to Dusi

DESPITE reports that the 2009 Dusi Canoe Marathon is under threat due to a land claim dispute in the Inanda dam area, organisers of the event say that it is all systems go for the big event which begins on Thursday and will end on Saturday.

About 1 400 paddlers are expected to take part in the race, which has held for the past 58 years.

The race is held over a period of three days, with the first day being 45 km, which includes 15km of portaging with the canoe.

Day two is also 45 km and ends with a 10 km stretch on the Inanda dam and the last day ends with 35 km of clean cold water let out of the dam.

Dusi spokesman Ray de Vries said: “We are absolutely ready for the event and everything is in place. We have arranged a meeting with amakhosi and prepared everything.

The water level is good for day one and two and we are currently waiting for the results from Umgeni Water for day three.

The marathon has overcome many obstacles over the past years and we are sure to continue.”
