Largest indoor sport arena coming to Mkondeni in December

2011-08-12 00:00

PIETERMARITZBURG will soon be home to a new indoor sports arena that will provide city residents with a purpose-built venue for a variety of popular indoor sports.

Project manager Raven Ahir told The Witness that a major multi-million rand sports arena is planned for Mkondeni.

Ahir said the arena will be the largest action sports arena in South Africa.

It is also the first purpose-built action sports arena in the country.

The arena is a franchise of Action Sports, South Africa’s premier indoor sport provider.

The local franchise will be known as “Action Sports SA, KZN Midlands”.

The arena will be Action Sports’ flagship complex.

The 3 092-square-metre arena will boast four indoor “fibre-grass” fields, each catering for indoor cricket, netball and hockey, as well as a giant field for indoor football covering 800 square-meters of artificial turf.

“There is definitely a need for it in the city. We started planning the development more than a year ago. The new venue will host different competitive sporting leagues, as well as provincial and national tournaments.” Ahir said.

“We will also host social and business events. The arena will have proper catering, a pub, as well as change-rooms and toilet facilities,”

The arena is expected to be opened in December 2011.

Given the popularity of indoor sport, Ahir said, it is planned to target thousands of participants on a monthly basis.

“We will welcome new teams, and also have teams set up from within the franchise. The arena will also have a kiddies’ play area.”

The arena will be at 67 Haworth Road in Mkondeni.
