Last chance to register

2011-03-04 00:00

THIS weekend will provide the last chance for South Coasters to register to vote in the local government elections on May 18.

Tomorrow and Sunday will see voters from the Hibiscus Coast making use of the many registration stations in the area.

Xolani Dlangalala, communications officer at the Hibiscus Coast Municipality (HCM), has urged those who have not registered yet to do so.

“We would like to encourage everybody who hasn’t registered yet to visit one of the stations this weekend,” he said. “Voting in these elections is very important and it is your right to do so.”

A registration drive was held on Feburary 5 and 6 and 8 014 voters on the Hibiscus Coast went to register.

Of those, 3 202 were new registrations while 4 722 were already on the voters’ roll but visited a station to record a change of location.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has expressed its satisfaction with the success of the registration drive in Feburary and has met the leaders of various wards on the South Coast to discuss ways of ensuring that as many people as possible register this weekend.

According to IEC records the HCM has 120 202 people registered to vote.

There are 108 registration stations in 29 wards. KZN is the leading province with the new registrations in South Africa. Gauteng is second with 91 708 followed by Eastern Cape with 90 933.
