Last games for some should up the competition

2013-11-02 00:00

THIS is the last Saturday of 2013 where all 10 top sides are playing cricket. Three of them — DHS, Glenwood and Clifton — play their final matches today. This will make their matches against Northwood, St Charles and Michaelhouse respectively, particularly significant.

There is just one match in the Midlands, with the other four in the Durban area. Hilton will be hosting Westville, one of the form teams in the province this year. Hilton, on the other hand, have not been at their best this term and it will be a big ask from the home side to improve on the previous results.

Westville are unbeaten against KZN sides, but with each successive win, the pressure builds to maintain the unbeaten status. Being away from home may give Hilton a slight advantage, but that is probably the only advantage Hilton have today, unless their SA U19 player Lungi Ngidi has a marvellous day with the ball.

Westville, however, with a strong core of provincial players, are playing with confidence and will be unlikely to falter against a side that seem to be lacking in self-belief.

Michaelhouse are the second form side in the province and they travel to Durban to play Clifton. As this is Clifton’s final game of the year, they will want to finish with a flourish, but the way the boys from Balgowan are performing, it will be very difficult for the home side. It would be a major upset if Clifton were to win this game.

Kearsney, after a poor Michaelmas Week, have put those results behind them and have had some impressive performances since then. They will host Maritzburg College, a team that seems to blow hot and cold. Kearsney has new-found confidence and it may give them the edge.

Glenwood host St Charles, and as the game is on Dixons, the home side must be favourites. St Charles have seldom played to their potential this term and will certainly find it difficult to do so, particularly as it is Glenwood’s last match of the year. This will be an added incentive to finish the year with a good win.

DHS travel across Durban to play against Northwood. As it is the last match for DHS, they will want to finish on a positive note, but so often the senior players in the side have not produced the goods. Northwood have also had a disappointing season and thus the winners today will likely be the side that most want the victory.

Selected fixtures: Hilton vs Westville, Clifton vs Michaelhouse, Kearsney vs Maritzburg College, Glenwood vs St Charles, Northwood vs DHS, Howick vs Voortrekker, Kloof vs Hillcrest, St Henrys vs Kingsway, Pinetown vs George Campbell, Westville II vs Treverton, Wartburg vs Alexandra, Thomas More vs Crawford LL.
