Last man: three ticks to go

2010-05-31 00:00

WHEN Frikkie Botha saw that he only had three seconds to finish the Comrades Marathon, he took a deep breath and sprinted to the finish line.

Botha (63), who runs for the Amersfoort Running Club in Mpumalanga, was the last man to cross the finish line at this year’s race, a feat he said he will never forget.

As he crossed the finish line, his legs turned to jelly and he collapsed. With some assistance from medical officials, he got back onto his feet and celebrated completing his 28th race.

“It was a tough race and at times, I felt like giving up. I’m so grateful that I completed it. I have never experienced such a difficult race before,” he said.

Botha said he was extremely tired, but very happy. He was sad that his wife, who has an eyesight problem, could not join him at the finish.

“I just want to share this good news with my wife who is at the hotel — and then sleep for a week,” he said.

Botha said he will be back next year for another race.
