Last round of Night Series

2012-03-06 00:00

THE last round of the Voortrekker Schools’ Night Rugby series took place last Wednesday evening. While the crowd was not as big as it has been on the two Friday evenings at the Peter Booysen rugby ground, it was nevertheless as enthusiastic.

A junior schools’ night rugby series is also taking place on the outer fields at Woodburn stadium. It has been named the Ralph Cawood Day/Night Series after he died suddenly in 2008. He did much for the development of rugby at junior level in the midlands, and was also involved in all facets of rugby. This series is run by the Maritzburg Rugby Academy.

Linpark, who has played each of the rounds at the Voortrekker series, played against Howick who were playing in their first outing. Both teams came close to dotting the ball over the tryline, but neither did, so they ended in a 0-0 draw.

The second game was between Westville and Greytown and a rout was expected. However, Greytown tackled well, pressurising Westville into mistakes. At half time Westville had scored two converted tries to a penalty by Greytown. Two further tries were scored in the second half for Westville to win 28-3. If Greytown could have won more ball their backline could have surprised Westville.

Westville was arguably the form team of the series and even though they lost 5-8 against Maritzburg College in the first round, they scored the most tries. Only in the last round did they find a kicker, as none of the tries in the first two rounds were converted.

College played against Voortrekker in the final game and the latter has probably been the team that has shown the most progress over the three rounds. They prevented College from scoring more than three tries and the latter would go on to win 19-0.

Shawn van Rensburg, the newly appointed director of rugby at Voortrekker, was pleased with the crowds and the interest shown by schools for the continuation of this pre-season series. Coaches have enjoyed the shortened format and rolling substitutes which has allowed various combinations to be tried in match situations.

Next year Van Rensburg is hoping that the series will have more schools involved as a number have shown interest for 2013. The series should also take place at Voortrekker as they will be putting up their own lights.

The first round of the Ralph Cawood series was played last Wednesday. The next round takes place tomorrow. There is then a week’s gap before the final round on March 22. In the last round two schools from the Border region, Dale College and Stirling, will be playing.
