Late night drive turns tragic as two youngsters die after car hits barrier

A LATE night drive to Pietermaritzburg ended tragically for two young Howick men when the car they were travelling in crashed on Town Hill in the early hours of yesterday morning.

“We had left Howick just going for a ride down towards Pietermaritzburg, we had no intentions and we were not going anywhere specific,” said Rakhil Ganess, a friend who was in another car and was one of the first people at the scene after the crash.

Ganess was best friends with Yasheel Juganath (19), who died in hospital yesterday morning.

Another young man died at the scene and three other people were injured, but their names were not released yesterday.

Ganess said he met up with his friends at a garage near Howick and they all decided to drive down to Pietermaritzburg.

“They left and I caught up them on the highway and overtook them, there were three cars driving down and I was in the second car.”

On Town Hill, his passenger told him to stop.

“My friend said he saw the lights of the black Polo Playa that Juganath was travelling in [behind them] swerving from one lane to the other on the freeway. I stopped my car and reversed and we were the first people at the scene.”

The car, with five occupants, had hit a barrier.

Ganess said it was extensively damaged. “Its front tyres were off … and the bumper had come off.”

He said all five occupants had been thrown out. “One person had died at the scene, the paramedics were trying to resuscitate the driver and I believe he is in ICU in hospital and the other two people were injured, but seemed okay.

“We started searching for Juganath because he was not with the injured, we found him on top of the embankment. How he got there I do not know. We called the paramedics to assist him because he was still breathing.”

He said he still did not know what had caused the accident.

On the death of his friend, he said it was a great loss. “He was a jovial fun guy and always there for you when you needed him.”

In another accident near Hidcote on the N3, a taxi and a car collided, leaving a five-months pregnant woman in a critical condition.

According to reports, the taxi veered from the southbound carriageway and hit the car in the other lane. Eleven other people were also injured in the accident.

On Saturday night on two cars and a taxi collided in Edendale Road, leaving two people with serious injuries and three others with minor injuries.
