Late payment angers uMngeni staff

2013-05-27 00:00

UMNGENI Municipality workers downed tools for a few hours following the late payment of their wages on Friday.

The Witness received reports that the workers had gone on strike.

Municipal manager Mpilo Ngubane said there was miscommunication between the municipality and the bank about when the workers’ wages were supposed to be paid out, which led to the delays.

“There was a disruption because the workers had not received their wages today [Thursday].

“What had happened was that we changed the date to pay salaries from the 15th to the 25th, so when it is a weekend, the salaries are paid at midnight on the 23rd so they would be available on the 24th.”

“There was miscommunication between us [municipality] and the banks to tell them they should release the wages on the 23rd at midnight and hence the banks stuck to the 24th for 25th agreement and the salaries were not released,” said Ngubane.

He said when the workers did not receive their wages they went to the management offices to query the matter.

He said most of the workers involved were from the technical services and those in the offices had continued working.

“This was not a serious matter and therefore it was sorted out quickly, there were slight disruptions for about two hours in the morning,” said Ngubane.
