Late winter chill brings snowy wonder to KZN

2014-08-30 00:00

PARTS of KwaZulu-Natal turned into a wintery wonderland as snowfall spread over isolated areas in the province yesterday.

People throughout the country posted pictures on the Snow Report SA Facebook page with breathtaking views of majestic mountain passes, gardens and roads that have been enveloped with layers of crystal-white snow. There were reports of light-to-moderate sleet and snowfall in the Nottingham Road, Bergville, Underburg, Kokstad and higher Drakensberg areas.

Cynthia Mdluli, a staff member at the Sani Pass Hotel, said they were very excited when they saw the snow in the morning.

“It came down quite thick in the morning but unfortunately began to melt at around 8 am. Now, during the day, it’s just a little sleet that’s blowing around,” she said.

Nomusa Dube-Ncube, Co-Operative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC for KZN, said disaster management teams were on alert as bad weather caused by the approaching cold front is expected to hit parts of KZN this weekend.

There were several accidents in the province due to the weather. According to Robert Mckenzie from the KZN EMS, a driver was killed when a heavy goods vehicle overturned on the N2 near Paddock.

Anita Heyl, from the N3 Toll Concession, said sections of the N3 route may be closed to traffic should conditions be deemed unsafe, while Transport MEC Willies Mchunu warned motorists to be extra cautious.

Closures on the N3 will be communicated via N3TC’s Twitter feed (@N3Route) and on its website
