Latest taxi killing condemned

2012-09-17 00:00

THE violence that plagues the KZN taxi industry claimed the life of another operator last week.

Sakhephi Mark Mkhize (59), of Folweni, was shot dead at Isipingo taxi rank in Durban on Thursday.

Police said the motive was not known and no arrests had been made.

The MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, strongly condemned the murders of taxi operators, which could cause instability in the industry, saying there was an urgent need “to transform the mindset of those working in the taxi industry”.

Mchunu said the murders supported his recommendation to the recent taxi indaba that the National Prosecuting Authority must consider establishing a special court to deal with taxi-related violence.

“We also feel strongly that there is a need for reviving the Police Taxi Violence Unit.”

He offered the family his condolences. — WR.
